Pine Cone Fossils

Coniferous trees were some of the first trees to arrive on land during the latter half of the Paleozoic around 317 million years ago. A conifer cone or pinecone is the seed-bearing structure of the tree. They are generally oval in shape. The seeds are protected by a woody “bract” until the seed is ready to drop. The seeds are arranged around a central axis of the cone. Many of these Pine Cone fossils can be found in northern Africa and some very nicely preserved cones are found in North and South America. Our selection of Paleozoic Pine Cone fossils change frequently and makes a great specimen to add to any fossil collection.
