Description
This is a beautiful fossil Ginkgo leaf (Ginkgo cranei). These are found in the Sentinel Butte Formation of North Dakota.
Superb detail down to the veins in the leaf. It fine detail and the whitish preservation contrasts beautifully against the dark orange-brown Matrix.
During this time in the Paleocene epoch, the Ginkgo genus was only represented by a single species. These species of Ginkgo went extinct approximately 7 million years ago.
The leaf is 1 3/4 long and 1 3/4 wide and exhibits great detail on a piece of matrix 2 3/4 by 3 1/4 inches.
