All are found within many layers of prehistory. All were buried by a fine grained soft sediment to begin their long process of fossilization.

Some of the fossils are from the Paleozoic Period when much of life was in tropical seas that covered much of the United States. And at that time the area was warm and sub-tropical. Life on land was just beginning to take hold but the seas were teeming with life. Animals such as corals, trilobite, and brachiopods lived and thrived.
Because of the tropical storms that ravaged the area of shallow seas, these animals were killed and buried. This beginners Fossil Collection is but a snapshot of life. There are other fossils from various periods to include mammal bones from the Pleistocene. The fossils are quite plentiful and are easily found in the beds of streams and rivers when water level is low. Certain areas of gray shale or clay are the most productive.
