Exceptional CALYMENE niagarensis from the famous Silurian fossil bed of Caleb’s Quarry, Rochester Shale Formation in Middleport, New York. These calymenid trilobites exhibit exquisite detail. They have been meticulously prepared using micro air abrasive technology.
The Calymene trilobites are normally found in the “Calymene” layer however they do also show up in other layers within the quarry. Though many have been found they are becoming more scarce as the quarry is being excavated and the zones are “playing out”. Now is the time to enhance your collection with Rochester Shale Trilobites.
This specimen is 1.28 inches long by.79 inches wide. It sits on a triangularly shaped piece of gray shale matrix 3 inches wide by 2 3/4 inches tall. The detail on the exoskeleton is exceptional.
There is a crack through the matrix and the trilobite. It has been expertly repaired. Some damage occurs with nearly all fossils. This one has been beautifully glued back together with a little loss of matrix and exoskeleton.
Extensive research has been done on this deposit and has yielded several new species and great amounts of information about the ancient Silurian Sea that Once covered the State of New York.
This is the specimen you will receive.
