CARYOCRINITES ornatus Rochester Shale Cystoid

1 in stock

This exceptionally detailed cystoid from the famous Silurian Rochester Shale beds of Caleb’s Quarry in Middleport New York.

This cystoid is on a massive shale block measuring 8 1/4 inches by 6 1/2 inches and over 1 inch thick to add to the stability of this magnificent echinoderm.  The 1.14 by .91 large inch theca shows exceptional detail and the plates are highly intricate.  Also exhibiting 9 brachials or arms with fine detail, down to many of the pinnules.  The largest brachial is 3 1/4 inches long though part was lost during collection..  The stem is 3 inches long and exhibits great detail. The cystoid is missing some of the center part of a few brachials lost during collection and recovery.

It was expertly and meticulously prepared using micro air abrasive technology.

This cystoid was killed and buried by a storm hence the brachials pointing in the same direction. The shale is a very fine grained shale showing the slurry that washed over the cystoid was comprised of small particles of sand, silt and clay.

A must have for any collector of Rochester Shale fossils.
