Description
Here is a very nice Whale Vertebra from deposits of Maryland.
At one time the eastern part of the United States especially Maryland, was a warm shallow inland sea teeming with life like the Whales.
This is a Fossil Cetacean Whale Vertebra bone from the Calvert Cliffs Formation of Eastern Maryland. The thoracic vertebra bone was found during a collecting expedition in a very famous fossil rich deposit. This formation is well known for all types of marine fossil remains. As the cliffs along the shore are weathered away, many animals including whales are being exposed. The area was a shallow sea during part of the Miocene period. These creatures like their modern day fish cousins are voracious meat eaters and superior predators of the oceans.
The vertebra is 3 1/8 inches tall by 4 1/4 inches wide. This Thoracic vertebra has been stabilized and prepared.
The Cetacean Whale Vertebra Fossil is part of the main body of the animal.
