This is a mass plate of Crane flies. This block consists at least 3 complete crane flies and several partials.
The Crane fly is in the order Diptera. Crane flies look similar to large mosquitoes but, unlike mosquitoes, crane flies do not bite.
The Crane flies average approximately 9 mm in size. One crane fly has the wings spread out beautifully and exhibits outstanding detail. They sit on an irregular 8.5 cm by 6 cm matrix block.
Insects are quite rare in the fossil record. They are generally small and easily overlooked during collection. These are small but very detailed.
