Cyprus Fossil Reef

Description

The Pliocene sediments of the Nicosia Formation are very rich in macrofossils, especially the upper stratigraphic horizons, where impressive occurrences of very rich fossiliferous layers are found consisting almost entirely of macrofossils.

The Nicosia Formation an ancient Fossil Cypress Coral Reef is particularly known for its diverse marine invertebrate fossils, including bivalves, gastropods, and many other animals.

This Cyprus Fossil Reef during the Pliocene the Nicosea Formation hints to a relatively young geological age for fossils. The upper parts of the formation are well known for being particularly rich in fossils with many fossil layers. This is a very well preserved coral reef that was discovered in 1996. Many of these Cyprus Fossil Reef animals have yet to be fully described.

Some of the specific fossils located in the Cyprus Fossil Reef of the Nicosea Formation are invertebrates. And there are many such as bivalves and gastropods. But Murex and Turritella are also abundant. Because this was a reef area, many different species can be found on each block.

The formation is known for fossiliferous layers, including a preserved fossil coral reef. Because the preservation of these fossils is so spectacular it allows us a window into the ancient tropical seas of the Pliocene. Many of the shells such as the scallops and clams are superbly preserved. But also notable are the Murex which display fine detail.

Photo’s do not do these pieces Justice. The blocks are 3 to 4 inches square and 4 inches high.
