Here is your chance to own a classic fossil from a classic site.
HARDER and Harder to obtain fossils from this private quarry in Middleport, New York
This is an exceptional Graptolite from the Rochester Shale of New York.
This Desmograptus Graptolite fossil was collected decades ago and just recently prepared by our prep lab..
Here is a super detailed but very rare graptolite from a classic site in NY.
Desmograptus Graptolite from this site are preserved in spectacular detail. These creatures thrived in the warm inland sea and lagoons that covered the area during the Silurian Period some 420 million years ago. The fossils living near what is now Middleport, New York were established near a delta system that periodically buried the colonies in silt. This silt eventually hardened into stone that preserved the crinoids in glorious detail. Storms that were frequent in the area then would bury the graptolites in soft mud to fossilize,
This Graptolite has exceptional detail and it is 1 1/4 inches wide and it sits on a piece of roughly triangular matrix 4 x 3 1/2 inches. It has been meticulously prepared using air abrasive technology. Because of the softness of the shale deposit care must be taken when preparing this type of fossils. Often the fossil can be blown off the rock it sits on.
There is still discussion about what these creatures are but they are defiantly interesting and valuable finds.
