This is an exceptionally detailed Pleistocene alligator scute. Scuta is the Greek word for shield. This creature was covered by dermal scutes, armored plates also called osteoderms.
Crocodillians arose some 95 million years ago and flourished in the Southeast in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. They also flourished in the Southwest during the Cretaceous they also lived in what is now South and North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana.
Water levels rose and fell during the Pleistocene the area around Florida and what are now rivers cut through sediment exposing these fossils. Rivers such as the Peace River and Withlacoochee. Not only alligators but also Mammoth, Mastodon, a wide variety of mammal bones, Giant Armadillos and Glyptodon scutes are also found.
This scute was recovered from the Withlacoochee River. This scute is 2 1/4 inches long, 2 inches wide and 7/8 inches tall. This is the scute you will receive.
