Description

This is a section of a Fossil Alligator Scute. This fragments were found while  collecting in Pleistocene deposits of the Peace River in Florida.

The Pleistocene Alligator Scute was found while prospecting and diving sites within the are of the Peace River in Florida. Because the area was a sub tropical environment creatures such as this thrived.  Today as rivers cut through the land and chance course fossils such as this begin to erode or wash into rivers.  So when prospecting bone fragments as well as turtle shell, Alligator scutes and other fossils are exposed. These fragments are from a an Alligator from the Pleistocene Period. There are also several other kinds of fossils found there so this points to a warm and wet environment. It is possible that the area was a shallow pond or a river. Because  other fossils are also found nearby, the evidence points to a river system.

Fossils such as this are often found as the area was rich with life. Because the rivers change course new fossils are always being exposed.

This deposit has been known for many years and fossils such as this Fossil Alligator Scute are continuously being eroded to the surface or into the river. Because these shells were found during a surface dive they are slightly worn.
