Description

Here is a nice Makaira (Billfish) Vertebra from deposits of North Carolina.

At one time the eastern part of the United States especially North Carolina, was a warm shallow inland sea teeming with life like the Billfish.

This is a Fossil Billfish Vertebra bone from the Yorktown Formation, Unit 1  of North Carolina. The caudal vertebra bone was found during a collecting expedition in a very famous fossil rich deposit. This formation is well known for all types of marine fossil remains. The area was a shallow sea during part of the Pliocene period. These creatures like their modern day fish cousins are voracious meat eaters and superior predators of the oceans.

The vertebra is 2 1/2 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide. This vertebra clearly shows the classic nearly hollow vertebra body with deep depressions from either side.

The Vertebra Fossil is part of the tail of the animal.
