Description

This is a very nice Fossil Snail from the hard rock limestone of Michigan.

This piece was found in the area of Alpena Michigan which was once an ancient sea floor.

This Fossil Loxonema Gastropod is a snail. It was found in an abandoned limestone quarry. Because the quarry used explosives this rock was broken open to reveal a fossil snail. It had lay open and exposed for decades but was recently found. But it was only partially exposed so further work was done to it to expose more of the Fossil Loxonema gastropod.

This one is 2 3/4 inches long and 1 inch at it’s widest point. It sits on a hard rock limestone matrix that is an irregular 4 by 3 inches. But this piece sits nicely on it’s base making it a wonderful desktop or cabinet piece.

Gastropods are snails. This Loxonema was a marine snail living in the ancient tropical seas that once covered the state of Michigan 380 million years ago. They usually had a coiled shell much as modern snails have coiled shells. But today some land snails have lost their shells. It is fairly rare to find a fossil gastropod complete because their shells were so thing. This on is a steinkern, an inside mold of the shell..
