Description
This is an Onchopristus Fossil Saw Toothed Shark Tooth.
This fossil is similar to that of the rare modern day sharks.
This Fossil Saw Toothed Shark tooth was found in the Kem Kem Beds in the Kem Kem Formation near Taouz, Morocco. Because these are found in such large numbers associated with many Spinosaurus remain it is believed they were food for the Spinosaurus.
These teeth are often found in terrible shape. But this one has excellent enamel and the barb is complete. This is an Onchopristus numidus tooth from a prehistoric Saw Toothed Shark. But there are a few endangered relatives of this shark still alive today. Today the modern fish also grow to larger sizes but the are not exactly the same as their ancestors.
This Fossil Saw Tooth Shark tooth is Cretaceous in age. And the area of Morocco at one time was a warm shallow seashore abundant with life. These sharks swam the shallows looking for food, but may not have realized they could be food for the Spinosaurus. Because these sharks were comprised of cartilage most of what is found today are these dramatic teeth. The shark would swing his head back and forth shredding it’s prey and the mouth was located on the underside of the body.
