This is an exceptional and VERY LARGE Dawsonceras americanum form the quarry in Middleport New York.
These fossils were collected decades ago and just recently prepared by our prep lab..
Here is a Super detailed cephalopod from a classic site in NY.
Fossils from this site are preserved in SPECTACULAR detail. This one has been repaired as it came from an area with very brittle shale. There is NO restoration just repair and glue.
Cephalopods thrived in the warm inland sea that covered the area during the Silurian Period some 420 million years ago. The fossils living near what is now Middleport New York were established near a delta system that periodically buried the colonies in silt. This silt eventually hardened into stone that preserved the fossils in glorious detail.
This Cephalopod has exceptional detail . It is 9 1/2 inches long sitting on a piece of matrix 13 1/2 by 6 inches. It has been meticulously prepared using air abrasive technology and as such revealed a partial Dalmanites cephalon beneath it.
