This is a fossilized March Fly that has been fossilized with the top view of the insect.
The March fly is in the order Diptera. They have the most extensive fossil record of any dipteran family. Early forms can be found in the Cretaceous fossil record. They look quite similar to modern forms. These flies are very abundant among fossil insect from the Tertiary period.
The Fly is approximately 7mm in size with the wings to the side of the body. The body is a bit thicker than others and this is a top view. It sits on an irregularly shaped 5.5 cm by 5 cm matrix
Insects are quite rare in the fossil record. They are generally small and easily overlooked during collection. These are small but very detailed.
