Description

Mammal Toe Bones

These animals are part of a very diverse group of extinct creatures in North America about 30 to 33 Million Years ago.

This is an grouping of  Mammal Toe Bones. Many of the animals are now extinct and may have close relatives.

These bones were not found associated. Because they were found during sifting operations the assemblage is considered a composite. But they are found mostly in the Bruhl Formation which is a part of the famous White River Formation. The Bruhl is aged between 33 and 30 million years ago and encompasses parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
The fossils from there are generally white in color because of the type of mineralization. The fossils are very brittle and care must be taken to remove them from rock. Sometimes the fossils are just laying on the surface because of erosion. This is the case with these as they were in loose soil.
Because of the sheer number of fossils found it is believed that they wandered the area in large herds. Often the bones are found disarticulated and broken apart, it is uncommon to find a complete skeleton. That is the case with this composite Mammal Toe Bones assemblage. They were found during sifting sediment.

And this comes in this handsome 4 1/2 inch by 5 1/2 black leatherette, glass – topped collectors case.
