Description
From the ancient Miocene Period one of the fiercest fossil Creatures in the oceans, the Megalodon.
This Megalodon tooth 3 5/8 inches long was recovered by divers off the coast of Wilmington, North Carolina.
Here is a very nice Megalodon Tooth 3 5/8 inches long. It measures correctly, diagonally from root tip to point at 3 5/8 inches. But this one also shows some serrations. It was found at the bottom of the ocean some 40 miles off the coast of Wilmington, North Carolina. But this ancient Miocene creature did swim the Atlantic until the late Pliocene. Because this tooth was found by divers it is slightly worn by the action of the water and sand. But the serrations still are present.
Odotus megalodon means “big tooth” is commonly known as Megalodon. But these are an extinct type of giant mackerel shark. And they lived approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago.
This Megalodon Tooth 3 5/8 shows great detail. There are some small chips in the enamel. The Megalodon was regarded as one of the largest and most powerful of the marine predators. But megalodon is only known from fragmentary remains because much of the creature was soft tissue and cartilage. Because cartilage does not fossilize well it is hard to determine actual size. So it is estimated that the maximum body length is between 47 and 80 ft.
This Otodus megalodon, 3 1/2 inch Megalodon Tooth was found in the Pungo River Formation some 40 miles offshore
