Here is a Super detailed fossil from a classic site in NY.

Fossils especially this Small Eucalyptocrinus Crinoid Calyx from this site are preserved in Spectacular detail. Because of the wide variety and number of these Crinoids it is also assumed they lived in dense communities,

This is an excellent example of a mall Eucalyptocrinus Crinoid Calyx from the Rochester Shale of Middleport, New York. Found in the Middleport quarry. This part of New York State was once the bottom of a shallow salt-water sea. Because it was a shallow sea. Because storms occasionally destroyed the ecosysyem and killed all the sea life, these fossils were able to form.

These Small Eucalyptocrinus Crinoid Calyx creatures grew on a small stalk and had small feathered arms extending from the top of the cystoid. But the arms are rarely found preserved.

The Small Eucalyptocrinus Crinoid Calyx is highly ornamented and you can clearly see the magnificent detail of this Crinoid.

This crinoid crown exhibits the very fine detail.  It is 3/4 inches wide by 5/8 inch tall. It is free of matrix and has been prepared using air abrasive technology.

Crinoids are actually animals and not plants as the common name “Sea Lilies” would suggest. They are Echinoderms, related to modern day starfish. They were filer feeders capturing their food with the long slender arms.

These crinoids inhabited the ancient Silurian Seas along-side many other species. So this crinoid calyx  is a must have for any collector of crinoids and especially of Rochester Shale fauna.
