Description

A wonderful trilobite from the famous fossil site in Europe. It is a Fossil Czech Trilobite called Ellipsocephallus hoffi (Schlotheim, 1823). But collecting in the Czech Republic is no longer allowed this is from an old collection.

Here is a great example of the trilobites coming from a classic and well known site. The trilobites from this location exhibit outstanding detail and are sometimes found in mass assemblages. They normally are preserved with a rich Brown or reddish color on a dark gray or gray matrix. Many from this site are also preserved with outstanding thick bodies that make these trilobites very showy.

The Nicely Inflated Czech Trilobite is from the famous fossil beds of the Litavka River valley in Central Bohemia, Czech Republic. Because the formation is the Jince and is Cambrian in age, these trilobites are some of the first to inhabit the earth.  These were extensively studied and described by Joachim Barrande.  Because Central Europe was once a tropical sea near the equator it had storms that devastated the area killed and buried these creatures. There were vast beds of multiple trilobite block mass plates but as collecting is no longer allowed the only way to get these specimens is from old collections and yard sales.

The Nicely Inflated Czech Trilobite has great definition. The Trilobite is 1/2 of an inch long. The Matrix is an irregular gray matrix 1 1/4 by 3.

And this is a classic trilobite from a classic site.
