Description

This is an Partial Fossil Glyptodon Scute from a large animal about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle.

This was an up armored creature related to the modern day Armadillo.

This scute was found in a Florida river and had been worn by the water action. The Partial Fossil Glyptodon Scute belonged to a creature that had hard armored plates on his back. The animals also had a club-like tail. These were slow moving megafauna that were easy prey had they not had armor protection. Each of the segments averaged around 1 inch think and were roughly hexagonal in shape in the center. But each central piece was surrounded all around by additional pieces making what appears to be a large hexagonal piece of armor.

They are an extinct group of large herbivorous creatures that lived in the Pliocene, about 3.2 million years ago and died off about 11,000 years ago. The have been found in many south American Countries such as Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. And they have also been found in river deposits in Florida.

The Glyptodonts were typically large four-legged animals with armored top shell that was made of hundreds of interconnected osteoderms. And other pieces of armor covered the tails and skull. They grew to about 6 and one half feet long and weighed about 800 pounds. This Affordable Fossil Glyptodont Scute is on the larger size though worn.

This one is not complete but it is 1 1/4 inches wide by 1 1/8 inches.
