The process of turning wood is to stone is difficult because the wood must be buried very quickly. It must be buried to protect it from insects and decay. There must also be large amounts of water. Because the water is full of minerals so as the wood rots it is replaced by those minerals. That is also how the colors are so bright. Madagascar is one location where this type of wood is found so the locals take advantage of that fact.

In the case of the wood from Madagascar usually those colors are earth tones but sometimes red and yellow colors do show up. In some cases a Large Slab of Petrified Wood will show damage. Some damage may be because of insects as they bore through the wood. Other times you may find the outside bark is also petrified. Petrified wood is the name given to wood that has been turned into stone.  Much of the original structure such as tree rings is kept. For this to happen the wood needs to be buried in an low in oxygen and with mineral-rich water. The color is due to the minerals that are present during fossilization. For example red colors are due to iron , greens due to copper, etc.
