Graptolites from this site are preserved in Spectacular detail. These creatures thrived in the warm inland sea that covered the area during the Silurian Period some 420 million years ago. The fossils living near what is now Middleport, New York were established near a delta system that periodically buried the colonies in silt. This silt eventually hardened into stone that preserved this fossil in glorious detail.
Parts of New York State were a shallow tropical sea. Because of the shallow water the sea was teeming with animals of all kinds. Some Graptolites were free floating and some were attached to the bottom of the ocean. This is so they could feed on passing food particles. Because of storms like hurricanes the sea was sometimes disturbed and these animals were buried in mud and sand. The Silurian Period was a time when coral reefs were just starting to form so animals could find safe places to hide.
This Graptolite has exceptional detail . It is 1 1/4 x 1 1/8 inches wide. It sits on a piece of roughly triangular matrix 3 1/4 x 3 It has been meticulously prepared using air abrasive technology. .
