Other Plant Fossils

Plant fossils are generally hard to find. The plants consist of soft tissues and thereby rot or decay away over time. In special cases, the plants and leaves are preserved as a carbon film on rocks, or the impression is etched into the rock. The actual leaf has decayed away but the impression remains. In some cases, fern fossils can be found in areas where coal mines abounded. The decaying plant material was responsible for producing coal. Generally, in these cases, there is some mineralization of the organic matter but usually only the impression remains.
